Indigenous Adult Education Network News & Welcome Message

Support for all

We spent time in March’s Network meeting talking about the programs we develop for those students who need more than academics and vocational training.

From programs to gain life skills or overcome addictions, like Opitciwan’s Mikon and Sakihikan, to Kahnawake’s social integration support for individuals leaving the prison system at Waseskun, to extra curricular cultural activities in La Romaine and Mashteuiatsh – we all agreed these types of holistic, culturally-grounded programs are not only encouraging but essential for engaging learners in our communities.

If you missed the last meeting, you can see the agenda and summary here.

This poster is our gift to you this month. We hope it inspires reflection in your milieu as much as it does for us.

The poster is part of a growing series of small posters to honour teachers & learning. Here is a folder of the images with and without the IAEN logo.

Feel free to use them and add your own logo if you like. (To add your logo or make changes, make a copy of the file called ‘_copy to modify teacher appreciation des enseignants.’) Here is a video that shows how to do that.

The images used are all from pixabay.com, unless otherwise noted, and are in the public domain.

This month’s poster includes a quotation from Melissa Drapeau, Pedagogical Consultant at FNAESC : “Indigenous Responsibility Towards Education. For education to be truly inclusive and equitable, and to pursue meaningful reconciliation, the Indigenization of curriculum is not optional, but essential, to validate and embed Indigenous perspectives and knowledge within all learning.

Artificial Intelligence

Teacher-created Resources

SJ Jessica Lee, Math & Science Specialist at the First Nations Regional Education Centre in Kahnawake, recently started talking about AI with her students. Her focus is on being transparent about its use and she does this by modeling effective learning with AI.

She created a Dos and Don’ts poster for her students – one version in school-learning language and another using some Gen Alpha slang. We’ve also translated it into French and a more informal Quebecois, too.

The pages can be printed out on legal size paper, 8.5″x14″.

You can see and download all four versions of the poster here.

Teaching & Learning Resources

Jessica’s posters are included in the Indigenous Adult Education Network’s growing collection of resources for teaching and learning with Artificial Intelligence.

Think of it as a starting point, where you will find

  • A conversation on building AI literacy
  • Teacher-made Resources
  • Links to online Courses
  • MEQ Resources – including a webinar, translated into English
  • And Even More Resources

Please let us know if you have anything you’d like to add to these resources!

News from the Waseskun Healing Community

Waseskun: a Cree word referring to that time just after a storm, when the dark clouds begin to part, the blue sky appears, and the first rays of sunlight shine through.

Waseskun is an Indigenous healing facility, the only one East of Manitoba. It serves Indigenous men coming from the prison system. “Waseskun offers a transformative space for those seeking to heal from intergenerational trauma, addiction and criminal behavior.” (from the Waseskun website)

Training Offer: VT in Indigenous Context

Understanding the realities and needs of Indigenous communities is essential to establishing meaningful and lasting partnerships for off-site vocational training (VT) in Indigenous communities.

The training “Favour Vocational Training in Indigenous Context” is the result of a project funded by the Quebec government’s ministère de l’Économie, de l’Innovation et de l’Énergie (Joncas et al., 2022-2026). The aim of the training is to improve understanding of the realities and needs of Indigenous communities by non-indigenous partners and the key elements for establishing meaningful and lasting partnerships with Indigenous organizations in order to improve VT in an Indigenous context, and, ultimately, the graduation rates.
