Indigenous Adult Education Network News & Welcome Message

Trust, Respect, & Connection

At the opening of this month’s IAEN meeting, Tealey Ka’senni:saks encouraged us all to thank the people, animals, and elements that contribute to our lives, and to remember the original instructions of love, honour, and respect.

Her words reminded me of Kanawaienton’s message about the relationships we create with learners.

Kanawienton is a teacher in correctional services. He shared a few stories at the 2024 Symposium that we have since put together as a small book called Connections in Corrections, with sections for reflection after each story. The learnings expand beyond correctional settings. They embody the original instructions of love, honour, and respect mentioned by Tealey.

The poster and the book are our gifts to you this month. We hope they inspire you as much as they do us.

The poster at the top of this section is part of a growing series of small posters to honour teachers & learning. Here is a folder of the images with and without the IAEN logo.

Feel free to use them and add your own logo if you like. (To add your logo or make changes, make a copy of the file called ‘_copy to modify teacher appreciation des enseignants.’) Here is a video that shows how to do that.

The images used are all from pixabay.com, unless otherwise noted, and are in the public domain.

This month’s poster includes a quotation from Kanawaienton’s book, Connections in Corrections : “…it was about realizing what the classroom had become. It wasn’t just a place for lessons or academics. It had become a space of trust, respect, and connection.”

IAEN Symposium

The 2024 IAEN symposium was a fabulous opportunity to learn from each other! Over 140 people gathered and chose from 13 different workshops.

Some of our presenters have shared their presentation materials with us. They are available to view in both English and French. So if you didn’t have a chance to see them in November, now’s your chance!

Head on over to the Symposium 2024 page to check out the presentations. They are definitely worth the read!

News from Partners

News from the Waseskun Healing Community

Waseskun: a Cree word referring to that time just after a storm, when the dark clouds begin to part, the blue sky appears, and the first rays of sunlight shine through.

Waseskun is an Indigenous healing facility, the only one East of Manitoba. It serves Indigenous men coming from the prison system. “Waseskun offers a transformative space for those seeking to heal from intergenerational trauma, addiction and criminal behavior.” (from the Waseskun website)

FCSSQ – TREAQ Conference Note

Training Offer: VT in Indigenous Context

Understanding the realities and needs of Indigenous communities is essential to establishing meaningful and lasting partnerships for off-site vocational training (VT) in Indigenous communities.

The training “Favour Vocational Training in Indigenous Context” is the result of a project funded by the Quebec government’s ministère de l’Économie, de l’Innovation et de l’Énergie (Joncas et al., 2022-2026). The aim of the training is to improve understanding of the realities and needs of Indigenous communities by non-indigenous partners and the key elements for establishing meaningful and lasting partnerships with Indigenous organizations in order to improve VT in an Indigenous context, and, ultimately, the graduation rates.
